Endangered Language Personal Response

What is the value of preserving indigenous languages? For example: Consider aboriginal languages with rich vocabularies used to describe the natural world.

The loss of a language is not just about losing the language but also the unique arts and cosmologies that come along with it. A language is is an important part of one's society and identity however when it dies out, future generations lose a vital part of their culture which contributes to the understanding of that certain culture. When a language begins to perish, the teachings, customs, and other inherited traditions are threatened as it is no longer being taught to new generations. It helps define and shape our very existence while providing a foundation for our beliefs and practices. For this reason language has become a vulnerable aspect of cultural heritage and the reason why it has become important to preserve it.When considering the example in the question, a language which contained rich vocabularies used to describe the natural world is the key to substantial and economical development. A loss of this language would hinder biodiversity conversations as we would no longer be able to incorporate knowledge into conversation and development activities. Indigenous knowledge provides the basis for problem solving strategies  and is an integral part of the development process of local communities.
